Acoustic levitation allows small objects, like droplets of liquid, to float. Unless you travel into the vacuum of space, sound is all around you every day. But most of the time, you probably don't think of it as a physical presence. You hear sounds; you don't touch them. The only exceptions may be loud nightclubs, cars with window-rattling speakers and ultrasound machines that pulverize kidney stones. But even then, you most likely don't think of what you feel as sound itself, but as the vibrations that sound creates in other objects. The idea that something so intangible can lift objects can seem unbelievable, but it's a real phenomenon. Acoustic levitation takes advantage of the properties of sound to cause solids, liquids and heavy gases to float. The process can take place in normal or reduced gravity. In other words, sound can levitate objects on Earth or in gas-filled enclosures in space.|Public discussion on Ukraine is all about confrontation. But do we know where we are going? In my life, I have seen four wars begun with great enthusiasm and public support, all of which we did not know how to end and from three of which we withdrew unilaterally. The test of policy is how it ends, not how it begins. Far too often the Ukrainian issue is posed as a showdown: whether Ukraine joins the East or the West. But if Ukraine is to survive and thrive, it must not be either side’s outpost against the other - it should function as a bridge between them. Russia must accept that to try to force Ukraine into a satellite status, and thereby move Russia’s borders again, would doom Moscow to repeat its history of self-fulfilling cycles of reciprocal pressures with Europe and the United States. The West must understand that, to Russia, Ukraine can never be just a foreign country. Porsche, like Lamborghini, is owned by Volkswagen AG. Audi representatives have also said that the brand's growth is due in large part to its SUV and crossover lineup. So Lamborghini is not the only upscale manufacturer to be eyeing these trends. By the time the Lamborghini Urus is finally available (sometime in 2017) it might have a lot more competition. The Urus' ultimate success depends on a few things we've already discussed. The timeliness of its release, for one. And the global appetite for luxury sport utility vehicles (when that time comes), for another. But, as Porsche can (and probably has) told Lamborghini (based on Porsche's experience with the Cayenne), it's essential that the Urus has the look and feel of the brand, even if a sport utility vehicle isn't quite what the loyal customers are looking for. Loyal customers are, of course, important for any brand to cultivate, and Lamborghini has its share of deep-pocket devotees.|To this man, fitness is more than just personal training. He's a health and fitness expert who can transform your body and your health. Q: How did you get into the fitness business? A: I originally started by establishing training centers in the studio lots. My expertise is in the management of facilities and implementing programs, and I developed one of the first scientifically-based training programs in Hollywood. I am considered more of a pioneer in the health. Fitness industry as it relates to facility development. I was one of the innovators in the late '70s. Early '80s that helped create the first full-service athletic club concept in America. So I'm more a businessman and lifestyle coach, if you will, and heath/fitness/sports expert than a trainer, but I certainly have done a lot of that. Q: In what stage of her life did you come in contact with Carrie Otis? A: I met Carrie probably 10 years ago through a mutual friend when she came out here to do her first film. Now, what does this imply? Well, it could be that, as the US intelligence community has indicated on more than one occasion, Russia could be seeking to carry out a false flag operation that might galvanize Russian attitudes. They might think they could do that quickly and thus preserve potentially both the element of surprise, but also their flexibility. If they spent the last month building their population up: "Let’s go do this, let’s get this done," then, there wouldn’t be any surprise. They also wouldn’t really be able to effectively back down if they decided not to do it. That makes sense. What I don’t fully understand is what we’re talking about when we say 150,000 Russian troops are at the border. I have this image of Russian soldiers hanging out in tents, but I assume that’s not quite accurate. Can you paint a picture of what this buildup looks like? The way the buildup happened, we saw a number of units from farther away deploy to the area before we saw some of the highest-readiness, locally deployed units move.|Soldiers with the Ukrainian armys 1st Battalion, 95th Separate Airmobile Brigade fire a ZU-23, a twin-barreled, 23 mm, anti-aircraft gun, during training at the Yavoriv Combat Training Center near Yavoriv, Ukraine, Aug. 31, 2017. A group of defense experts called on the U.S. Ukraine, bolstering its defenses against possible Russian aggression. In the meantime, the Kremlin has issued various demands to the West, including a pledge that Ukraine will never join NATO. Moscow also wants the alliance to cease troop rotations into the Baltic states. On Sunday, U.S. President Joe Biden told Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a telephone call that the United States and its allies will "respond decisively" if Russia further invades Ukraine, the White House said. The call came shortly after Biden’s conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin about easing tensions on the border with Ukraine, where the Kremlin has reportedly massed about 100,000 troops. Following Russia’s 2014 annexation of Ukrainian territory, the U.S. Baltic states and Poland. Those NATO missions thus far have been rotational, although some military experts say they should be made permanent.

Russia-Ukraine For the last several weeks, as you’ve seen in some of the reports, we’ve been collaborating with our European allies to identify areas where Russia could use energy as a weapon in its aggressive strategy against Ukraine. These include, for us, contingency planning in the event of a Russian invasion as they attempt to upend the world order, to damage infrastructure, or withholding supplies from markets in a retaliation for sanctions or other countermeasures by the United States and our allies. We’re working with countries and companies around the world to ensure the security of supply and to mitigate against price shocks affecting both the American people and the global economy. A disruption in the physical energy supplies transiting Ukraine would, clearly, most acutely affect natural gas markets in Europe. And so we’re engaging our European allies to coordinate our response planning, including talking to them how they deploy their existing energy stockpiles, which are, obviously, at significantly low levels this year due to the reduced Russian supplies over the last several months.|The Hope diamond has passed through many hands in the years since it was created. Here, the diamond is displayed in a temporary setting, in the National Museum of Natural History. When you imagine the Hope diamond, a jewel that weighs more than 45 carats and is rumored to be cursed, what do you see? Perhaps a gem the size of a pumpkin that gives off an eerie, red glow, with ominous music in the background? Its spooky backstory of bad luck - which we'll get to soon - kind of makes you wonder why anyone would want the thing in the first place, despite its opulence. But as hosts Holly Frey and Tracy V. Wilson tell us in this two-part episode of Stuff You Missed in History Class, the Hope diamond's size might not be as dramatic as you think. As Tracy puts it, bringing a kid to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (where the jewel is housed) with the promise of seeing the biggest diamond ever might disappoint the child. Some of the seeds that we extracted from the footprints. Our discovery may also reopen speculation about other archaeological sites in the Americas. One of them is Chiquihuite Cave in Mexico. Archaeologists recently claimed that evidence from this cave suggests humans occupied the Americas around 30,000 years ago - 7,000 years before people left the White Sands footprints. But the Chiquihuite Cave findings are disputed by some, as stone tools can be difficult to interpret and tool-like stones can form via natural processes. Stone tools can also move between layers of sediment and rock. Fossil footprints can't. They are fixed on a bedding plane, and so provide more reliable evidence of exactly when humans left them. Yet the White Sands evidence is suggestive of a playful, relatively relaxed setting, with teenagers and children spending time together in a group. This is perhaps not that surprising. Children and teenagers are more energetic and playful than adults and therefore leave more traces. Adults tend to be more economical in their movement, leaving fewer tracks. But another interpretation of this new footprint evidence is that the teenagers were part of the workforce in these early bands of hunter-gatherers. It's possible that the tracks were left by young people fetching. Carrying resources for their prehistoric parents. In any case, the people that left their tracks on White Sands were some of the earliest known American teens. Set in stone, their footprints pay tribute to their forebears, who we now know walked the long land bridge into the Americas millennia earlier than what was commonly believed. What White Sands might have looked like 23,000 years ago. This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. You can find the original article here. For the last decade, armies of bark beetles have been devastating forestlands in California and other places, and scientists are fighting back. To do so, they need citizen scientists - aka the general public - to trap the tiny bugs, which are as small as a grain of rice, and mail them back to their labs for DNA studies. The only problem? People don't keep laboratory-grade preservatives at home. So how could the beetles' DNA remain intact until it reached their labs? The answer, researchers found, resided in two common household products: hand sanitizer and automobile antifreeze. During the study, conducted by researchers at the University of Florida, 33 ambrosia beetles were left for two or seven days in either 95 percent ethanol (the control); hand sanitizer; or propylene- or ethanol-based automobile antifreeze. You can do so much more on a iPad than merely type! In order to ensure that the base line is accurately read it is best that the paper be unlined, for lined paper has a way of guiding the writer in a course, which may not be his real self. Most writing has some degree of variation. The variations often occur in the writing slant and also, but not as frequently, in the base line. When the amount of change is insignificant (such as under 10 degrees), it is regarded as the normal flexibility of the individual and merely indicates that he is not stiff. But when the degree of change in the slant is significant, we most definitely take this into consideration. Generally speaking, when the base line is straight (and certain other factors are not present), we find an individual who does not go to pieces if something unexpected occurs. You can see this by taking a ruler and placing it under the middle-zone letters-they are all basically equidistant from the ruler.

The latter converts the tedious and heuristic task of encoder optimization into a data-driven learning problem. As a result, the inference process of optimized learned image/video encoders is faster than traditional R-D optimization of image and video encoders. In this work, we propose a novel learned hierarchical bi-directional video compression (LHBDC) framework that combines the advantages of traditional hierarchical bi-directional MC with data-driven end-to-end R-D optimization. We introduce innovations, such as flow-field subsampling, flow-vector prediction, learned bi-directional MC masking, which we show, by means of ablation studies, that each contributes to the superior performance of our method. Our extensive experimental results demonstrate we achieve the best R-D results that are reported for learned video codecs to date in both PSNR and MS-SSIM. In addition, the R-D performance of our end-to-end optimized codec outperforms those of both x265 and SVT-HEVC encoders ("veryslow" preset) in PSNR and MS-SSIM as well as HM 16.23 reference software in MS-SSIM. Fans of e-cigarettes say they enjoy many of the same sensations as tobacco smokers -- holding the device in their hand, inhaling and exhaling. Many e-cigarettes have a light-emitting diode (LED) on the end that lights up when the user inhales, simulating flame. The liquid or "smoke juice" that fills the cartridges is usually propylene glycol, an additive that the FDA has approved for use in food. Consumers can buy cartridges containing different amounts of nicotine, or no nicotine at all. Manufacturers usually add flavorings to the liquid. Options range from tobacco and menthol flavor to mint, chocolate, coffee, apple, cherry and caramel. E-cigarette companies sell their products in retail stores, but also, increasingly, online. A wide array of models. Brands are available. Some mimic the appearance of tobacco cigarettes, while others look like cigars, pipes and even pens. Prices vary, ranging from $40 to $120 for a starter kit, which usually includes a charger and a few cartridges along with the e-cigarette.|Mobile video advertising is the fastest growing medium that has overtaken all other means of marketing tools by storm. Today, people are using Smartphones to search almost anything of their daily requirement while the social media sites are also designed with the "buy" button that encourage the buyer to make a purchase. The mobile advertising industry has reached a point where companies cannot afford to ignore this high-engaging medium. There are so many platforms available in the market to get started with. But a good knowledge of the same is essential to broaden your chance of earning more revenue at a low-budget. An ideal marketing platform is something that helps in engaging a large number of people in a single go, while saving huge marketing spend. Before proceeding, do a thoughtful research on; what and how mobile video advertising works and how it can be beneficial for your small or big business. We position this work as a first step in understanding the suitability of various object detection kernels on embedded boards in the accuracy-latency-energy axes, opening the door for much farther development in solutions customized to embedded systems and for benchmarking such solutions. With this, Virtuoso is able to achieve up to 286 FPS on the NVIDIA Jetson AGX Xavier board, which is up to 45 times faster than the baseline EfficientDet D3 and 15 times faster than the baseline EfficientDet D0. In addition, we also observe up to 97.2% energy reduction using Virtuoso compared to the baseline YOLO (v3) - a widely used object detector designed for mobiles. With this comprehensive benchmark, Virtuoso has shown superiority to all the above protocols, leading the accuracy frontier at every efficiency level on NVIDIA Jetson mobile GPUs. Video analytic systems have seen widespread success in various domains, ranging from computationally heavy tasks such as recognizing faces for surveillance, to mobile applications such as detecting objects for mobile-based augmented reality (AR) (Rohan et al., 2019; Apicharttrisorn et al., 2019; Rao et al., 2017), and to real-time systems such as localizing pedestrians and cars for autonomous driving (Feng et al., 2020; Arnold et al., 2019; Li et al., 2019). A key function shared by these applications is the ability to detect objects in videos.
